Harrows – So Many Options, How Do I Choose?
Generally speaking harrows fall into one of three categories – cultivation, levelling and pasture. Within each of these categories consideration is given to specific applications, style of the harrow and weight.
Cultivation
If your ground is uneven, roughly cleared or contains light stony areas, then the flexible Stump Jump Harrow is the secondary tillage implement to consider. Ruggedly constructed using High Carbon Steel, the floating stump jump action is a time tested agricultural implement. Suitable for breaking down clods, final seed preparation of ground and levelling pugged up or packed down heavy pasture country. Stump Jump’s are also ideal for use in the preparation stage of vegetable growing and weed control.
Each Stump Jump section is attached to the drawbar by four hitching points – one ahead of each row of tines, to ensure true tracking and correct stump-jump action.
There is also the option of Jumbo Cultivation Harrow which meet a need for a flexible, cultivation-style. This Harrow is suitable for seedbed preparation and soil working in heavier soils. It is significantly heavier than standard Stump Jump harrows. Heavier steel components add to weight for improved penetration, greater strength and an extended working life.
Greater tine layback and wide inter-rank tine spacing give the Jumbo Cultivation Harrow a superior trash handling ability. Longer cut tines allow a greater working depth and provide a long working life. A fully interlocking tine/frame design assists in maintaining tines in the optimum vertical working position.
The Jumbo Cultivation harrow can also be used in conjunction with heavy primary tillage implements including disc harrows, to produce the basis of a finer seedbed. It is also useful for pasture establishment or renovation, and harrowing where extra weight and strength is required.
Diamond harrows are suitable for open country and lighter loamy soils, they are an effective implement used for weed control and final seedbed preparation. Specialising in shattering soil crusts allowing improved aeration and moisture penetration, it will give your crops every chance of reliable germination and subsequent vigour.
Levelling
Levelling Harrows are an excellent choice to complement sowing or cultivation implements. Designed to level soil and seedbeds, the flexible frame design provides durability in all soil types. 3 and 4 rank versions are suitable for use to cover seed in light to medium soils in conjunction with combines and seed drills. The 5 rank model is used in heavier soils to counter weed growth and break down large clods. It is a popular implement that complements cultivators, scarifiers or chisel plows.
If you want to level your land and need a Harrow that will stand up to the demands of today’s conditions then the ‘Extra Heavy’ Levelling Harrow is a good option. Built from heavier High Carbon Steel, each Tine is specially forged revealing a diamond shape designed to level your ground. Tine spacing remains the same as the standard version. They are especially suitable for heavier clay type soils and used after primary or secondary tillage.
Pasture
Pasture yield:
The Pastureland Harrow System is recommended for pasture establishment, maintenance and renovation applications. Ideal for breaking down and distributing animal manures and other organic matter evenly across the whole pasture, using this machine will encourage pasture growth. This light duty harrow is suitable generally for pasture areas of less than 100 acres (40 hectares) and tows easily behind small and medium size tractors.
Utilising four rows of double-sided tripod tine units which slice through manure, clods and coarse vegetation. The tripod section is followed by heavy steel square chain mesh which further pulverises and spreads the manure and organic matter and revitalises the pasture. The “standard” single-mesh chain has 8 rows of chain complete with a spreader bar and drag weights.
Pasture rehabilitation:
For larger field operations over 100 acres (40 hectares), where greater strength and durability are needed in a pasture harrow then a system consisting of a front drawbar, 3, 4 or 5-rank Pasture Harrow sections and heavy steel square chain mesh together with the appropriate weights is a good option. . The flexibility and strength of the Pasture Harrow sections easily accommodates uneven ground and stony areas of roughly cleared country which would present difficulties for rigid tines harrows. Each harrow section has a 4-point pull which ensures true tracking and proper operation of the tine section.
The heavy duty square chain mesh breaks down and distributes animal manures and other organic matter evenly across the whole pasture. This promotes a quick response to seasonal breaks and optimum pasture growth.
The All Rounder:
The Chain Harrow is a multipurpose tool and an important element in Pasture maintenance. Versatile in its own right as a means of spreading organic matter and levelling seedbeds, Chain Harrows are beneficial in strip grazed pasture situations and a useful adjunct to efficient harvesting of clover seed by vacuum harvesters. Ideal in direct drilling operations, Chain Harrows are effective in spreading and gently levelling the soil after the important final operation of seeding.
